Alex is responsible for the firm’s overall investment strategy, portfolio construction, and risk management framework across all investment vehicles. As CIO, Alex provides executive oversight of underwriting standards, portfolio allocation, and credit decision-making, ensuring consistency with Cortland’s capital-preservation mandate and return objectives across market cycles. He serves as Lead Portfolio Manager and is a senior member of the firm’s Credit Committee.

In his role, Alex sets Cortland’s investment philosophy, credit policies, and portfolio governance framework, guiding the firm’s approach to senior-secured, asset-based lending. He works closely with underwriting, portfolio management, and risk teams to ensure disciplined execution, robust downside protection, and strong alignment between investment decisions and client mandates.

With over a decade of experience in credit underwriting and investment management, Alex brings deep institutional expertise to Cortland’s investment platform. He is a CFA Charterholder and a graduate of the BBA (Finance) program at Wilfrid Laurier University. Prior to joining Cortland, he held investment roles at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management and Caldwell Investment Management. His leadership has been instrumental in building Cortland’s reputation for strong risk-adjusted returns, disciplined portfolio construction, and one of the lowest default rates in the private credit market.
